Hello - does any one have experience of seeing higher blood sugar reading in the morning compared to last reading at night. Why does the blood sugar go up when one is sleeping and no additional intake has occured

I don't remember all the details but it has to do with circadian rhythms and various organs going through cycles of predominance or recession. Probably someone else can explain it in more detail, but my understanding is that it is normal for everyone for the highest reading in the day to be first thing in the morning. Of course, in diabetics, our goal is to get it within normal ranges, but when we do return to normal ranges, the early morning reading is the acid test.

Some diabetics use a refractometer as used for agricultural purposes to check their urine sugar levels rather than doing so many finger sticks. One thing we notice right away is that when we are dehydrated our blood sugar levels run higher. I would be curious to see if people drank extra water (especially if it has a scant amount of full spectrum salt as in Himalayan) if their morning sugars would be lower just because of the extra hydration and minieralization. Since we usually don't drink water in the night, that could be another part of the cause of the higher sugars. Just a thought.
Some of the things I've read (including my glucose monitor's manual) stated that the "fasting" blood glucose level should be lower than it is two hours after meals. But that's for adults who do NOT have diabetes. They state the normal fasting range for non-diabetics is 74 - 106 mg/dl. Two hours after eating the same non-diabetic person should still be under 140 mg/dl.

I started monitoring on Dec 23rd. About one hour after eating steamed potatoes and possibly some sugar in the salad dressing I came in at 285. I started eating low carb on Monday, Jan 4 and got a monitor Jan 6. It started out at exactly 200 before eating breakfast and went down 3 hours after eating to 159. Later it dipped again to 141. It seems totally backwards. The next morning before eating it was back up to 196. I then ate a small amount of tofu and exercised and drank a fair amount of water and now it's at 194. So I don't get it either.

But I know I'm going to feel better eating lighter and less carbs. I've already lost a bit of stomach flab if appearance is any indication.
